Hey guys, I've been shopping around for a computer build for the holidays, and I'm about to send
the list of parts to santa, but I'm stuck on the most important component, the processor. I cant
decide weather to get the Q6600, or the E8500 ? I plan on using FS9 for the most part until
those new i7 processors lower in price. But I would also like to have a enjoyable FSX experience.
Right now, my computer is a 3 year old emachine with single core 2.4ghz, 2gb ram, nvidia 8500GT.
I can run fs9 with medium high settings, loads of payware, on vatsim with 20-30 fps. FSX runs on
medium low with framerates from 10-20. The Q6600 and the E8500 are similar in price but the
2 cores vs 4 cores is what im having trouble with. I have a price limit so im not looking to spend
anymore then the price of these two cpu's. So my main question is: Which processor would
run better with fs9 fully maxed with all my paywares flying on vatsim, and run FSX on med-high
with some payware online, with respectable frame rates ? I know fsx will take advantage of all
4 cores of the Q, but the E has a higher freq. I'm not looking to overclock either. Just wanna pop
it in and get flying.
Thanks a lot !

if your going to use fs9 mostly, i would get the e8500, the clock speed will help more than the cores its not using.

With the E8500, would I be able to run FSX better then the Q ? I'm guessing not, I just wanna
the most bang for buck.
Thanks !

If you plan on going I7 down the road, then you need a new Motherboard and Memory to go with the I7, just some food for thought. Also even when you upgrade you current to an E or a Q don't expect much more on the sense of frames in FSX at Medium high to max as well. the 20-30 range you have in FS9 os about all you need to maintain for a nice looking sim, Frame rates are for bench mark geeks, the human eye can only decipher 25 to 30 frames to begin with. If santa is nice look at th mid range I7 and a good DDR3 PCIE2 Mobo and some good ram. then you will notice a difference. you can always save your pennies for a rainy day then get a nice Video card to supplement the system.

I am waiting until Spring, Then I am going to let this 680I go and get an X58 or 790I board, for the I7 , I will keep the 8800 GT's for now then when that rainy day comes get some GX280's PCIE2 does have its advantages over 1X I just cant justify buying a PCIE2 board to run the 775 socket, then have to get a I7 board for the new platform. It's a pay me now or pay me later game.

lol thats gonna be a expensive rig Anthony ! The one I'm building should be more then enough
for my FS9 crave... Some fsx too, but nothing to extreme, My goal is to keep the build under
800 and I'm at 750 with the everything needed. And now that I realize that I'll have to get a
new mobo for the i7, I'm just gonna wait til the next flight sim comes out until I upgrade to that.
