got an update.. i am reading about the B2 stepping model TLD problem.. sounds like the patch fixes it but at a 15% performance hit.
umm.. why buy stuff that doesnt work out the gate? Ok.. so.. switching that over.. and spending LESS money.. look at SAME layout but the Phenom 9600 switch that for a AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 at 74.99
I liked AMD back in the day it has been a while since I had one.
anyone got any comments?

The TLD issue has been corrected as an 'on-chip' silicon fix. There are no patches for the processors, they are good out of the box. Also, the Phenom is much faster than the base Athlon64. I have a similar rig build in April 2008 that runs very well. FSX FPS of 30+ to as high as 100 with high settings. FS9 is off the charts. My specs:
MSI K9A2 Neo-F AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom 9550 Agena 2.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W 65nm Quad-Core Processor
2x Kingston HyperX NVIDIA SLI-Ready 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel (4Gb total and yes 2x2GB would be better but I added memory in 2 2GB groups)
SAPPHIRE 100226L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card
700w power supply
XP Pro 32-bit. I've tried 64 bit and liked the result but I have some work related hardware that has no 64-bit drivers available.
I short, this system screams and is very stable. It's taken every thing I can throw at it with ease.

8800 GT 512 EVGA.. it is in my current rig.. funny thing.. the proc i had in the old one p4 3.2 straight Connrow i think.. couldnt throw stuff at it fast enough so it probably hasnt worked at all in that silly computer. Brand new Pirrelli tires on a ford festiva..
I was looking at that same kinda rig there Rob.. that same board.. that is the same type of ram I got.. G skill was a better price at the time i bought. seemed compatible.. etc.
FYI your ram is on SALE today at new egg with a FREE 4gb usb key.. 38 bucks after 40 dollar mail in rebate.
the 2x2gig stuff not the 1gig stuff.. if you wanted to fix that.. whats 6 gig versus 8 gig.. lol.. not sure it would make ANY difference.
and from what I read you are spot on about the AMD processors.. the AMD 9600 i was considering has a fault built in (it is the B2 stepping model) and is known to be buggy in hypothetical high CPU utilization scenarios. (which might be impossible for us to generate with how we use PCs from what i read) now.. your model the 9550 the -50 at the end indicating that yours is the NEW B3 stepping model which has the fix built in. so.. it is fixed in the NEW processors. THere is a patch for the -00 phenoms that is a motherboard fix and.. what happens is it disables the L3 cache (dont ask i dont know but it is what makes a phenom super whizbang cool) which makes the 9x00 series B2 stepping model phenoms artificially 15-25% SLOWER just by the setting on the motherboard to do "the TLD patch" i read many reports that said.. that patch ISNT needed it WONT freeze (that is what happens high CPU use.. and the machine will just LOCK) so.. many users were saying.. i got a phenom 9600 and i DISABLED the TLD patch on the mobo setting.. and i have NEVER had a problem. So.. I was sitting there.. and almost as I was researching processors. the newegg site popped up this AMD 7750.. and.. the price was 20-30 less than the Phenom (2.2 ghz) the Black edition 7750 ran at a clock speed of 2.7 mhz.. so.. even faster than the phenom PER processor clock speed.
so.. i ask around.. we flight sim.. we ARENT the typical pc gamer.. we run a graphics intensive program.. and in the background we multitask with ALL kinds of apps..
our beloved ACARS
for me..
Active Sky
Squawkbox
a web browser
windows Media player for in flight at cruise movies.
and countless other apps..
but.. i was told.. dual core higher Mhz is going to be better than quad core..
so.. the 7750.. which of course sports the -50 meaning B3 stepping NO TLD problem label a 2.7 GHZ clock.. which is swift..
so.. yea.. this 7750 SHOULD scream.. but.. i got some worries about getting the ram to operate at 1066. seems there is a trick to it.. default voltage is 1.8 to the ram and you have to set that MANUALLY in BIOS to 2.2 or 2.1 whatever the MFG calls for.. then the 1066 speed starts working. HUGE problems with people trying to get the ram to run at 1066 they are all saying it runs at 800.. So.. anyhow..
Whew.. for what it is worth that was some of my research that went into my decision..
It SHOULD be a screamer.. and for 250 bucks out of pocket.. NOT bad..
IMHO

John,
On my MSI board I simply stepped the FSB/Memory Ratio multiplier in the bios to 1:2.66 to get the ram to run at 1066. No issues at all.
Regardless of the processor, I highly recommend the MSI board.

and I now fully recommend the rig I just made.. I havent installed FS yet.. because i am having SO much fun with Vista 64..
My Vista experience is now a 5.5 and only because of the processor everything else is 5.9.
So.. Wow.. if someone wants to make an upgrade.. and has 250 to spend.. it is a SCREAMER.. I love this machine. I got my ram up to 1066 just like you said.. absolute Piece of cake.. this is the first system where I have put it all together in the case.. fired it up and NOT had it beep at me. (broke) I took my time and really it wasnt that hard. Completely awesome experience.. the PC is like lightening and could not have been easier.
Details to follow. I am a little scared to put FSX on it and see what frame rates are.. i dont want to be underwhelmed.
irrational fear I know.. So much different having a completely NON IDE machine.. everything is SATA2 now. no ide no floppy.. no USB 1 stuff.. all fast.. and I am loving it.
I think first flight will be this evening.
