Hey guys,
So I have been having a lot of trouble with my desktop recently that is preventing me from flying!
Whenever I run flightsim after 5 minutes the whole computer just locks up, the mouse and everything freezes. I have to reboot it to get it working agian. This also happens whenever I try to make a skype video call or if I watch a youtube video on full screen. What gives?

This happened after I updated my graphics driver. I was also using a pretty big TV screen as my monitor. But anyway my friend came over and we reformatted the whole thing and got all new drivers installed and everything. I had not had a chance to install FS and try it agian but it still freezes even when I have an incoming skype call or video!

How about going back to the "old" driver that worked?
Other than that.. have you had a look inside your pc lately?
Cleaned out dust from CPU cooler and other fans?
Because a cooler looking like this:
Can seriously effect your computers performance.

Hey guys...even after a clean reformat and install of windows:
I updated my drivers, cleaned the case and have been monitoring the temps using a program called SpeedFan. My computer will seriously just lockup when viewing a video or using flight sim or skype video calls.
My computer temps are as follows:
CPU 43C
Internal Temp 43C
Remote Temp 38C
Hard-drive 36C
Core0 42C
Core1 44C
Any help is appreciated!

"This happened after I updated my graphics driver"
Well when you did the format of your computer, did you go back to the driver that caused you the problem or did you try going back to an older driver?

What kinda graphic card do you have btw?

I did the reformat then installed new drivers from the ATI Radeon site. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon 1900X GT 256MB.
Inside of the computer is clean. All fans are confirmed working by visual inspection including the one on the graphics card.

Any other suggestions guys? I'd really hate to have to go out and spend a lot of money on a new graphics card if that is not the problem.
Could I have a bad stick of RAM or something causing this?
Thanks!

Did you try installing the old driver you had before the problems occured?
Search and try a different driver anyway, just to rule out if it's a driver issue.
Try swapping to other cable output on your card.
If your mb has built in graphics, try that one.
If you have more than one slot for graphic on your mb and mb supports card in slot 2,try it.
You know someone you can swap cards with to test? Try it, then you will find out if it is the card or another issue.

I was able to pickup the exact same graphics card I had on eBay for $25 and so far everything is working. No more freezing! Now if I can find the time to reinstall all my FS stuff I will be all set!
Thanks guys!

One important part of the system that no one mentioned, but it could still be a
lurking problem that switching to the new video might just mask is your
POWER SUPPLY. If certain power lines sag it can cause bad things to happen
like an NMI that will give you symptoms just like these.
So, for future reference, keep it in mind.

So I guess I spoke too soon. My computer indeed froze again, however I am 95% I have finally identified the problem!
My computer ONLY freezes if I have my computer set to send audio to my USB Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 headset. If I set windows to send sound to my motherboard sound card which is "IDT Audio" it doesn't freeze. I have left video/sound playback on my computer on for hours with the motherboard only sound config and my computer will never freeze however if the sound is routed to the USB headset my computer freezes within one minute of playing a video with sound.
What gives? Any solution to this problem? My headset is plugged into one of the front panel USB ports. I also notice that with my front ports not all devices will be recognized. For example if I plug in my external hard drive with a SEPARATE power supply to the HD it will recognize it. It will also recognize my USB headset. However it will not reconginze things like my iPhone plugged into it.

Well, you probably need the power supply because it is a desktop external which requires the power supply to run. It sounds like it is a driver issue with your headset, however I believe that the headset should just use a generic driver. Are you running windows XP/is the headset new? Also I don't know if an Iphone needs drivers to be recognized, it may need them if you are running an XP machine. It could also be that for some reason your front USB ports may be USB 1.1 and come devices require USB 2.0, however this seems unlikely. Try plugging your headset into your rear USB ports and see what happens.

This screen freeze situation hit me about this time last summer and has recurred twice this week resulting in the need to re-boot and restart FS9 to complete my Vatsim flights. Most of last summer I used a cooling fan to blow air over the computer when I was running FS and it stopped the problem. I am doing this again right now and so far it has again fixed my problem. The temperature in my office runs in the low 80s F even as I condition the air with my home ac. The office is about 5 degrees warmer with the computers running than the other rooms of my house. I remember a thread sometime here in the last couple of years that addressed this and that is what inspired me to run the fan. All I can say is that it has worked so far for me.
