Do we go by DAV or DVA prefix when logging into VATSIM? I see a mixture of both online and I'm curious which is the standard. Thanks.

DALxxxx is the callsign that I use. xxxx being the number of the mainline flight that I am simming. If I am using a Delta Connection carrier, I use the callsign of the connection carrier.

Most pilots use DAL and either their pilot ID (example: DAL2728), or the flight number like Brittany does. I don't think there's a "standard" per se, as I've seen folks use DAL, DVA, and even DL on occasion. Some will also, like Brittany, use the callsign of the Delta Connection carrier or codeshare carrier--CAA for Candler, SKW for Skywest, etc.
When in doubt, you can't go wrong with just DAL + your pilot ID, but there is no real "standard" per se that I'm aware of.

There has been discussion of this in the past. I think Lewis is right. However, for Delta online events, I believe the rule is DAL and your pilot ID number.

Thanks to all for the responses. I think I'm going to use DAL2728 for all my stuff. 2728 is kinda catchy and easy to hear when trying to sort through a lot of traffic with a center. :-)
Thanks all.

Although many controllers probably recognize "DAV" as being Delta VA, the best way for a Delta flight to be recognized is via "DAL". That is the real world designator for Delta. But that is up to you...

Just my 2 cents. I always use DAL and then my pilots ID. IE. DAL2054. In the squakbox flight plan remarks area I will typically put the Delta Flight number I'm flying. If you use the DVA ACARS your going to put the delta flight number in there anyways, so its really not a big issues either way.
Cheers,
Andrew

I'm not going to go into detail, but from a controllers standpoint we'd perfer use DAL. It's easier for us when you guys check-in and say "Delta 494" to find DAL(by typing the first like 5 digits(DAL49) then eventually finding you under DVA. Plus DAL would be more realistic. :-P

Seoul Approach kept calling me Dallas 2335, I think that was him but for the most part international controllers recognize the DAL. I tried using the codeshare of the flight I was on but that just gets confusing. That is like being called Iceman when you know your name is Goose

We have always been exceedingly reluctant to enforce a "standard" or rules in general here. There are a number of virtual airlines who do have a particular requirement in this area of callsigns, or require that you fly online with a specific comment in your flight plan to identify you as a member of that virtual airline.
This is probably my libertarian tendencies coming out, but I really don't like trying to enforce an almost unenforceable rule in general, never mind for the sake of consistency. If you wish to file as DAL or DVA or the Delta Connection callsign, it's up to you. I think most of us do DAL, but that's neither here nor there. If you wish to use your pilot number or the real flight number, that's again up to you.
The only time where we would ask for consistency is when there's a practical reason for this, and that's during one of our group events. In such a situation, we're going to have 20-50 pilots all flying the same real world flight, so it makes sense to file using your pilot ID. Otherwise, use your own preference and common sense.
Cheers!

I concur with Luke. The callsign that our pilots use is strictly a matter of personal preference.
From a practical standpoint it makes sense to use DAL and either your PID or flight number. Another practical consideration is the use of the same callsign enables fellow pilots to quickly identify you and program your callsing in ServInfo. By standardizing, it makes it easy to identify you and chat online.
I would suggest that you add in the VATSIM comment area "www.deltava.org" to identify you as a DVA pilot and enable non-members a means for contacting us. Limit that amount of text to avoid burdening ATC with too much info.

I got an idea.
When simulating normal mainline airline operations, we should use DAL and the flight number. For Delta Connection, it would be either CAA, COM, CHQ, FRL, SKW, or TCF, followed by the actual flight number (can be found at Flight Aware.).
But when you are doing group flights, why not do the DVA and your pilot number? This way, those of us who aren't inclined to participate in group events, can feel comfortable flying.

My problem with the whole thing is when I look at Serv-info, I obviously see "non"-DVA pilots out there... just the other night, I checked out THREE pilots flying around, one using DELTAXXX, one using DLXXX, and one using DALXXX.
None of the three filed flight plans. They were just out there flying around using the Delta name making us look bad, like a bunch of non-aviation-educated pilots just playing around. They were flying at wrong altitudes, etc, and I actually listened to the DELTAXXX pilot on the radio, and he was beyond lost.
I was always STRONGLY for the use of DALXXX, but after listening to the Vatsim users who log in using DAL just because they like Delta, makes me rethink a mandatory rule of using DVA to ensure that controllers know that a DVA pilot is actally part of Delta Virtual Airlines, and at least they have some sort of clue.
But at least for the short future, I'll continue to use DAL1628 because that's where I've logged all of my hours on Vatsim with (except those in private planes).

Thanks for this forum post! I started logging my first few flights as DAL{flight ##}, but was not too keen on how that appears in VATSIM tallies, and also with having to try to memorize a new flight number for ATC with each new flight. When I made the switch, I was worried that I was "breaking the rules," but nobody seemed to call me on it, so I continued doing it.
Now I don't have to feel bad! In my own opinion, DAL{pilod_id} is perfect.

Well, online, again, I recommend DAL and not DVA if on VATSIM. DVA may confuse controllers whereas DAL is universally known as Delta.

duplicate callsigns are still a minor problem.
I went to log in and couldnt because DAL544 was being used..so I pull up servinfo and the pilot is a regular over at AAL,so I logged in on DVA544 and waited for him to arrive/land at ATL and log off so i could log back in on my callsign of DAL544...There is a valid DAL544 flight of which he was flying...sometimes you get on VATSIM at the wrong time and you just have to suck it up and wait or use a different callsign...
but I will always have something in my comments box for ATC to see anyways...LSU Charter flight or Delta va.org flight or something to that effect...
I highly recommend that you put www.deltava.org in the comments section of your flightplan.
That identifies you as one of the elite..lol

As a controller I too suggest using DAL instead of DVA. More realistic that way. if for some reason the flight number you enter is being used at that time, you can use your regular DVA call sign and file the pierep with the flight number, I've done that several times when this has occured. So if I want to fly DAL701 and it is being used on the server, I'll just use DAL2332, my DVA number for that flight, then file the pierep at DAL701 since I flew the leg for the DAL701 trip.
