How do you completely uninstall fsx? I uninstalled them in the control panel (fsx and sp2), ran a registry cleaner and it still says that another version is installed when insert the disk. HELP!

You need to use the UNINSTALLER program that is/was in your root FSX folder. Using the Control Panel Add/Remove programs leaves many unattended remnants in your Registry - that's why you're getting that message

I had the same problem. I'd done the same thing.
I powered down my system, did a cold boot, ran the resistry cleaner, did another cold boot, then had no problem.

You still have pieces of FSX left in the registry. After the cold boot, Windows will know that FSX is no longer there to support the pieces in the registry and Tune-Up Utilities will get rid of those pieces.

I would advise against restoring. FSX doesn't like that.
FSX leaves a lot of remmants behind when you uninstall. Check these folders and delete everything FSX related (you'll need to empty the recycle bin) -

>Users> [ user name ] >Appdata>Local>Microsoft
>Documents>FSX files

That does not clear the registry...I would reformat! I know it's a giant pain, that's why I got an image program. I have two images - one with a clean windows install, FSX and FS9, and another with only Windows....has saved me a couple of times.

if you are go in and manually do it - I HIGHLY recommend not doing that. If what you have done so far hasn't cured the problem - formatting is your best bet. Just make sure you have your install discs for the OS...and I would write down - or copy any install programs you have on your drive and save them to a DVD or external drive to be able to reload.
And buy a program (or similar) like ACRONIS True Image - and when you have your system up and running, make an image of it - then when you have FSX loaded without any addons make another image. This way if something like this happens again, you just run the image and you're back in business much faster.

THE UNINSTALL
WARNING - this will completely remove everything associated with FSX including your saved flights and fsx.cfg. Back these up if you'd like, but it is imperative that you start off completely clean to ensure such files weren't involved with your issue. Leaving them there through the reinstall could trigger the issue again if it is related to them.
Go to Add or Remove Programs under Windows XP or Programs and Features under Vista or Windows 7. Remove any addons you have installed for FSX, including aircraft, scenery, and utilities such as weather addons. You need to do this because many addons (like our own) feature validation protection that will get reset when you uninstall, if you leave your addons there, they may fail to reinstall correctly later. You cannot just copy addon folders and then copy them back in later - this does not work for most due to things that need to happen during their installation to properly setup and validate them.
Double check the list and make sure you got all of them. You may also want to check the Start Menu Programs list and see if you have any addons remaining there as well which may only uninstall through a link in the menu.
Find the entry for FSX and uninstall it. This may say Acceleration, Service Pack 2, etc.
Once it is done uninstalling, close the control panel and reopen it. It is likely you will now see FSX still present in the list. This is because the previous step only uninstalls the Acceleration pack or Service Pack. Uninstall whatever is now in the list for FSX. Keep going through this step until no FSX entry shows up after you reload the control panel.
Open Windows Explorer and find your FSX folder. By default this is located at:
32-bit versions of Windows: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X
64-bit versions of Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Delete this folder (just the FSX one, not the entire tree), answering yes to any dialogs that pop up warning you about it. You don't want anything left over in this folder so that we start out completely clean for the reinstall.
Open Windows Explorer and find your FSX application data folder. By default this is located at:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(Your Windows Account Name)\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX
Windows Vista\Windows 7: C:\Users\(Your Windows Account Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX
Delete this folder as before, being careful to only delete the FSX part, not the entire folder tree.
Open Windows Explorer and find your FSX shader cache folder. By default this is located at:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX
Windows Vista\Windows 7: C:\Users\(Your Windows Account Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX
Delete this folder as before, being careful to only delete the FSX part, not the entire folder tree.
Open Windows Explorer and find your FSX saved flights folder. By default this is located at:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(Your Windows Account Name)\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files
Windows Vista: C:\Users\(Your Windows Account Name)\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files
Windows 7: C:\Users\(Your Windows Account Name)\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files
Delete this folder as with the two above.
The system is now clean of FSX.

As several others have said already, you need to wipe the drive an reinstall Windows ....if you're unable or unwilling then you're out of luck.
There isn't any further help to offer.

How about seeing if it's something else? If I go ahead and install it, it says activation was not successful.

There are two scenarios here. First, you can just format and reinstall, which will take a few hours. The other is chase a ghost, which you're currently doing. This could take days to weeks of Googling and posting in forums, continuous frustration, and possibly never getting an answer, so formatting anyway. Just wipe the drive and be done with it.

Alright, few q's then.
1. Does it 100% work?
2. All you have to do is wipe your hard drive?
3. Can you just delete all of the folders in your hard drive?
4. Do you just back up the folders formerly in there and paste them back after you wipe the drive?

1. Yes.
2. See below.
3. No.
4. Back up anything you want to keep to a separate drive or flash drive.
The easiest way to do it is to first back up any files you want to keep, then put your OS disk in the drive and restart the computer. Before you start the process you should also make sure you have all the drivers you will need (GPU, NIC, etc.) on a flash drive so you can easily reinstall them. The computer should boot from the OS disk when you restart it, from there just follow the instructions to reinstall windows.

+1, Always FDISK or partition your drive 1st. That way you know everything is wiped out and nothing is lingering after the format.

Does partitioning force you to reinstall everything? And what is the advantage of it?

a partition takes one hard drive and turns it into two. this has numerous uses - the best being in case of future reformat, you only format the first partition, leaving your other partition in tact. so you would save your pictures, downloads, music, documents etc on your second 'logical' partition.
regardless if you partition your drive or not, a reformat is still necessary if you want to properly reinstall fs - based on what i have read in this thread so far.
there are some freeware programs out that let you partition your drive, then you are able to move your files and backups to your logical partition, then you may proceed with the reformat, at least that is how id do it - and i have done it 100s of times.
and i would recommend x1000 what Andy K recommends with imaging software. I have 5 computers in the house, all with numerous images that let me go back to various points in the computers life - they are stored off site and on different computers - redundancy is key.
did you build this computer? do you have a windows disk?
dan

Alright, so after i reformat, do i install fsx on the newly partitioned part of the hard drive? And to make sure i did it right, i selected the hard drive (C) and chose shrink volume...
Also, will it say that FSX is already installed when i install it on the newly partitioned part if it said it originally before i partitioned and didn't do anything to fix it?

Greg, I feel your pain, but I will agree with the people saying to re-format and start from scratch. It seems that you formatted the hard drive but Im pretty sure (at least it is what I would do) what they mean it is to install everything again, including Windows, that is the only 100% safe way to do it. If you have more than one hard drive, backup all the important documents (not programs, you wiill have to install everything in your computer again), emails account and so on, then format the hard drives and install windows again. Before you do that though, make sure you have all the "drivers" for your computer available. Depending on your system, Dell, HP, home build, go to the websites and get the latest drivers, including the video card drivers, once you have everything in a CD or USB drive, then proceed to format, install windows, then drivers (all of them), then start installing all the programs you want. Believe it or not, even though it is a major pain in my rear, I try to do this at least once a year. Computers get messy and when you do this you can see a big improvement. I also try to open the computer case and clean the inside with an air bottle (be careful how close you get the straw and then blow). Sometimes the inside looks really bad with dust accumulation. Men, sorry to hear your frustration but once you do this twice or three times it becomes very easy. Also you can find tons of websites depending on your OS that tells you step by step how to format and reinstall windows. Good luck and if someone thinks of a different way to do it or at least easier way.

i don't think my parents will let me reinstall everything on the computer because it's their's, but i reformatted the hard like i said. So do you think it will work if i select the new partition for fsx to be installed on. Or will it still say another version is still installed? i inserted the disk and selected remove FSX, deleted the app data folders, and ran Eusing registry cleaner.

Then I see a problem, I don't think the formatting the hard drive is the problem but the windows registry. i know you erase everything on the registry concerning FSX, or at least you thought you did. Windows is a funny OS and like I said Greg, for me the only way 100% proof is to do what I and other told you, but now I see your dilema with it is not your system but your parents, I wont go there. hehehehe. Good luck!
