I have a brand new Dell XPS 8500 that is less than a month old. After last night's event, the HDD (on which FSX and all addons were stored) failed. Huuuuuge pain. I didn't have anything backed up because it was a brand new computer. Fortunately my SSD and operating system still works, but I am going to have to reinstall FSX, redownload all the addons that I've scoured avsim for and purchased over time. What a nightmare.
Word to the wise: Remember to back up. Frequently.

What kind of failure was it? I've used the application GetDataBack NTFS on unresponsive hard disks in Windows and still recovered a lot of data.

Not sure, I basically can't access it from "My computer" at all. Tried running a chkdisk and it runs extremely slowly, only went through 3 percent after over half an hour, most sectors "unreadable". I think it's most likely a mechanical failure so I don't believe the data will be recoverable absent a recovery of the mechanical part(s) that has/have failed.

You also might try disconnecting the hard drive and putting it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Then reconnect the drive and boot your machine. This is a very short term fix so I would only try to move your files to another drive so you don't lose anything. Once you have the files backed up, you can install a replacement hard drive and copy these saved files back to your newly installed hard drive. Hope this works for you.

And watch the condensation from going from hot to cold, fly all over the inside of your computer?. We're not talking about a cylinder liner for a Farmall M here!:) If you believe it is a thermal issue best just hit it with a spray of "cold Air". Or turn canned air upside down and use the propellent to cool it. If it were a thermal issue it would work fine until it had been used for a spell.
Reformatt and start over. If it wont formatt you have a HDD issue. now is better than having a whole bunch of addons installed.

Jason if this computer is still under warranty then call dell and make them send you another one. They may have to install it for you as part of the warranty but you don't want to go through this again if the HDD is defective in 4 months. Better get it replaced now while you have to re-install everything anyway.. Use the warranty like its meant to.
