My current specs are a i7 920 overclocked to 3.9, 6GB RAM, 850 watt Corsair PS, EGVA GTX 275 and other components making it a reasonably high end system imho. I'm ready to upgrade my GPU to a EVGA GTX 560ti Ultra. I'm excellent at following instructions but am not a computer guru. It seems an easy matter to follow the detailed instructions on how to remove the old driver (which I've done in the past when updating drivers) and the physical installation seems identical to the one now in the slot. It seems that if I follow the procedure and install the new downloaded certified driver I should be good to go. This is my question: Even though it seems easy, when I read posts on the EVGA dedicated forum it seems that people sometime have trouble with the installation of a new video card. Are they in the minority or am I likely to encounter BSODs, strange video behavior, etc? I'd like to not spend money taking everything to a shop for what should be a routine upgrade, but I will if necessary. What have you guys done or experienced? Advice is appreciated.

Well basically it's pretty simple. Just uninstall the software for the old card (do this through the Control Panel.) Shut down the system, be sure to disconnect power, and remove the old card. Replace it with the new one and reboot. (Reconnect power first - I've missed that a hundred times!) Windows will detect the card and install the driver automatically more than likely, but once you're up and running you can use the CD to install the manufacturer's software for the device.
Let me know if you have any trouble.

Hi Chuck
In addition to what Ryan advises, I would recommend using this http://www.guru3d.com/content_page/guru3d_driver_sweeper.html to make sure there aren't any bits of the old driver left behind. Additionally, check on the manufacturers website that the drivers that come on the CD are the most current.
Any probs - come back here

Chuck, we've got similar systems. Mine is a 4 year old Intel Core i7 920 2.6GHz overclocked to 3.6GHz with an Nvidia 250 series GTX I believe. Is yours a newer i7? I'm curious how you got yours stable at 3.9GHz. I can go above 3.6 and have liquid cooling but it's not stable.

Jason, Yes we appear to have the same processor. My motherboard is the Asus P6T Deluxe V2 and I did the overclock following guidance I received from various overclocking sites. I do know that each processor has its own limitations and I may have been fortunate that mine clocked as well as it did. If you would like me to email my settings I'd be happy to do so. Incidentally, I've yet to make the switch to the new card as I sit here looking at it. I'll let you guys know as soon as I complete the operation and thanks for the encouragement. I know it's not difficult but my history with computers has been sometimes it's best to leave things alone. We'll see and I'll let y'all know how it goes/went.

If you read the actual instructions and documentation that comes with stuff like that, you'd think you would need a PhD in rocket telemetry or something. The manuals have a tendency to overcomplicate an otherwise pretty easy process, and discourage people in the process.
Good luck, you'll do fine.

Chuck you'll do fine. In terms of video cards and more importantly video card drivers, we've come a long way in the last 10 years. Personally I find Nvidia to be rock solid and fool proof in terms of stability as well as making installation/upgrades easy and fool proof.

I make a new gaming computer for myself aout every other year. I change vid cards about every year. Having said that I agree with what everyone is telling you. It is a simple process. The only thing I would recommend that I have not seen is after the install and the drivers are correct to make sure that your driver is set for FSX.
